click a channel in the sidebar
channel order is by most-recent activity, so the channels with new messages bubble to the top.

the right pane loads that channel
the message history loads with a divider showing where you left off ("new messages below"). older messages appear above the divider.

on mobile, the panes stack
small screens show one pane at a time. tap a channel to load it, tap the back arrow to return to the channel list.
