pick the right custom field type

five field types: text, long text, number, date, dropdown. the type changes how the field works in filters, exports, and the detail sheet — pick once, it's painful to change later.

3 steps~2 min
  1. 1

    text vs long text

text = one line ("property size," "preferred stylist"). long text = a paragraph (notes, free-form preferences). long text doesn't show in the table column — it only renders in the detail sheet.

  2. 2

    number and date

number for anything you might want to sort or sum (lot size, lifetime value). date for one-off dates like "birthday" or "first visit." both show in filters with proper operators.

  3. 3

dropdown for anything you'll filter by

service tier (basic / premium / vip), source channel, neighborhood — anything where you want a tight set of values. type the options when you create the field.

    tip

if you're tempted to use text for something like "service tier," don't — use a dropdown. text fields make filters and reports messy. dropdowns keep the data clean.
