track a variable recurring expense

for recurring bills with amounts that bounce — utilities, fuel, phone. katydid keeps a rolling 6-month average so spikes stand out.

3 steps~2 min
  1. 1

    open the variable tab

the variable side is for vendors that show up every cycle but the dollar amount changes.

  2. 2

    add the vendor

create the row once. each cycle, drop in the new amount when the bill arrives.

  3. 3

    watch the rolling average

katydid shows the rolling 6-month mean alongside the latest amount. a $400 utility bill against a $200 average means somebody left the lights on.

    tip

the rolling average gets more useful with sample size. give it 3–6 months of data before relying on it for spike detection.
