open the promo and click "audience"
in the promo's edit view, the audience tab is where you choose who can use the code. default is "any customer".

pick a segment
options include "new customers only" (no past invoices), "existing customers" (one or more paid invoices), "top spenders" (top 10% by lifetime value), "dormant" (no purchase in 90 days), or "specific tag" (any dragonfly tag).

the code now only works for customers who match. anyone outside the segment who tries to use it sees "this code isn't valid for your account" at pawpaw checkout — no awkward over-discounting.
tipfor win-backs, target "dormant" with a strong discount (25–40% off). for thank-yous to top customers, target "top spenders" with a smaller discount but a personal note in the email.
