tin verification (when the wire is live)

the irs runs a tin-match service that verifies a name + tin combination matches their records. when track1099 / tax1099 wires up, sweetgum runs the check automatically.

  1. 1

    today — manual

you'd need to run the check yourself via the irs e-services portal or pay the partner for an api call. most operators skip until january.

  2. 2

    soon — automatic

the partner wire fires a tin-match check the moment a w-9 lands. mismatches flag red on the contractor card so you can ask for a corrected w-9 immediately.

  3. 3

    why it matters

filing a 1099 with a name/tin that doesn't match the irs's records triggers backup-withholding rules and irs notices. catching it in april is way easier than catching it in december.

    tip

for any contractor who's just an llc or sole prop, the tin should be the owner's ssn (not the llc's ein) — that's a common mismatch. if they have an s-corp or partnership ein, it's the ein.
